About the Course

This course introduces students to the rich cultural tradition of Phad painting, a form of Rajasthani folk art. The focus will be on creating a Phad-style depiction of the Hanuman Chalisa, an iconic devotional hymn. By the end of the course, students will have created a vibrant, storytelling Phad artwork based on the verses of the Hanuman Chalisa.

About the Artist Lokesh Joshi

Lokesh Joshi, a skilled Phad artist from Bhilwara, Rajasthan, began painting at the young age of 10. He hails from a family deeply rooted in the Phad tradition, where his mother became the first female Phad artist. Breaking societal norms, his father taught her the family’s painting tradition, a role previously reserved for men. Lokesh has since carried forward this legacy, becoming a respected figure in Phad painting, known for his intricate and vibrant work. Through his dedication, he continues to preserve and modernize the art, inspiring future generations.

 
Lokesh Joshi has been associated with Sacred Roots for the past three years, where he actively teaches Phad painting to the next generation. His involvement with Sacred Roots reflects his dedication to passing on the traditional art form while fostering a deeper appreciation for cultural heritage among young artists. Through workshops and educational programs, Lokesh plays a vital role in ensuring that the rich legacy of Phad painting continues to thrive and evolve with modern times.
